Karnataka pips Maharashtra to win national conservation energy award-2025

BENGALURU: Facing stiff competition from neighbouring Maharashtra and after losing by a narrow margin in energy conservation programmes in 2024, Karnataka bounced back strongly this year to bag the National Energy Conservation Award (NECA)–2025 for the best-performing state in implementing energy efficiency initiatives. Karnataka also maintained its ‘front-runner’ position for three consecutive years—2020, 2021–22, and 2023—in the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI). Sources in the Energy Department revealed that Karnataka outscored Maharashtra by 2.75 points on a 100-point scale in the latest evaluation.President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to TD Rajegowda, Chairperson of Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL), and KP Rudrappaiah, Managing Director of KREDL, in recognition of the state’s outstanding contribution to energy conservation and efficiency. The NECA was conferred under the State Energy Efficiency Performance Award (SDA Group-I) category. The award is assessed based on seven key parameters, including cross-sector programmes, energy-efficient buildings, efficiency measures in agriculture, municipal and transport services, distribution companies, and industrial sectors.Energy Minister KJ George said Karnataka has consistently ranked among the top-performing states in energy efficiency. “Energy-efficient measures are crucial in combating climate change and global warming. We are happy that Karnataka has regained and maintained its leadership position,” he said. Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Gaurav Gupta reiterated the state government’s strong commitment to energy conservation and green energy initiatives. He said the focus remains on improving energy efficiency across sectors while creating greater public awareness about sustainable energy practices.
