Engineering student drowns in river

Mangaluru: A final-year engineering student drowned in Nethravati river Tuesday evening while spending time with friends near Kallagundi in Kalmanja village of Belthangady taluk. The victim is Shripoorna, 22.Sources said eight students from an engineering college in Ujire were swimming in the river and reportedly taking pictures. Shripoorna, a native of Gokak, is suspected to have slipped into the water and drowned.Other students raised an alarm, prompting residents to rush to the spot.Members of Sri Dharmasthala Shaurya Disaster Management Team, personnel from fire and emergency services and from Dharmasthala police station searched for over four hours in the river and recovered her body at 9.30pm.Lift stops at mart, trapped occupants rescuedShivamogga: Nine people, including two children, were rescued after an elevator broke down due to a technical snag at a mart in Gopala, Shivamogga, Monday evening.Despite there being no power outage, the elevator ground to a halt and trapped the occupants inside due to a sudden technical failure.According to officials, the rescued included seven adults and two children. While one woman briefly felt dizzy and exhausted during the ordeal, she recovered shortly after the rescue operations and was able to return home safely.
