Another dowry death: Karnataka woman dies by suicide over 'harassment, torture' by husband and in-laws
BENGALURU: A 24-year-old woman died by suicide by hanging herself following alleged mental harassment and dowry-related torture by her husband and in-laws in Karnataka’s Ballari district, police said on Tuesday.
The deceased, identified as Aishwarya, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her parents’ residence in Kampli town on May 17, officials said, according to news agency PTI.
Police have arrested her husband, Pradeep Kumar, a veterinarian working with the Animal Husbandry Department, in connection with the case.
According to police, Aishwarya, in her alleged death note, accused her husband and in-laws of mentally harassing her and subjecting her to dowry-related abuse.
The couple had married after a love relationship and had been married for over one-and-a-half years, police said.
Investigators said Aishwarya had left her husband’s house on May 14 and returned to her parents’ home following alleged mental harassment.
Based on a complaint filed by her father, police registered a case against her husband and in-laws under Sections 80 (dowry death), 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives) and other relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act, said Suman D Pennekar, Superintendent of Police (Ballari).
"We have secured her husband in connection with the case. All allegations are being looked into and further investigation is underway," she said.
