18,000 pourakarmikas to skip Bangalore cleaning on Friday
BANGALORE: With garbage piling up across the city, on the second day of BBMP's protest, Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy on Thursday appealed to the garbage contractors to resume to work. Finally 4,000 Pourakarmikas (PK)employed directly by the BBMP have decided to work from Friday. The BBMP recruited PKs are largely employed in South Bangalore and thus the affected ones will be the areas in north, east, west of Bangalore where 18,000 PKs hired by private contractors are working.
In a meeting held with the mayor and solid waste management contractors, the contractors refused to work in when the BBMP employees are on protest.

"Even if we sweep the city, there are no engineers of BBMP working to take the attendance of PKs," said the contractors.
Meeting may get called off
The office bearers of BBMP officers and employees' union will be meeting on Friday morning to take a decision on whether to take the strike forward or to withdraw. "The commissioner has told us that the issue has been discussed with the state government and he has asked us to resume to work. The union will take decision only on Friday," said R Subramanyam, president of the union.
When contacted, BBMP Special commissioner KR Niranjana said that the issue will resolved by talking different parties involved. "The employees have aired their grievances and we are trying to get them to get back to work, as public must not be affected because of the protest. Finally, we have convince everyone on the position of law," he said.
