SRN docs remove 10Kg filarial scrotum in rare surgery
Prayagraj: In a rare and complex surgery, doctors at Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital successfully removed a massive 10.3Kg filarial scrotum from a patient suffering from filarial hydrocele. The patient endured this debilitating condition for several years, leading to significant swelling and deformation of the genital region. The surgery was led by renowned plastic surgeon and vice principal of Motilal Nehru Medical College, Dr Mohit Jain, who described the procedure as both technically and emotionally challenging. "The patient's genitalia developed a rare 'Ram's horn' deformity, which we were able to reconstruct successfully. More than the weight, the real victory lies in restoring the patient's dignity and quality of life," said Dr Jain. The meticulous surgery involved the excision of dense, lymph-laden tissue weighing over 10 kg. Such cases of scrotal elephantiasis, though uncommon, are seen in tropical regions and often result from prolonged, untreated filariasis. Also in the team were Dr Vinayak Siddharth, Dr Yasharth Sharma and Dr Shivam Mittal.
The anaesthesia team was led by Assistant Professor Dr Anamika Pandey."This was a rare and high-risk case. The surgical team showed remarkable coordination and sensitivity throughout the process," Dr Jain added. The patient is currently stable and under post-operative observation. Doctors are hopeful for a full recovery and a significant improvement in the patient's physical and psychological well-being.
