Weed in hostel: No HC relief to student

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court on Thursday refused to grant any relief to a final-year master's degree student of the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn), who was suspended for alleged substance abuse.The student filed a petition against the institute's decision taken on Dec 17, 2025, by which it suspended him, along with other students, for two years after finding them guilty of smoking weed. This student got admission to the master's degree course in the subject of cognitive science in July 2024. In Dec 2024, one of the students was found with marijuana seeds in his hostel room. Upon inquiry, he revealed the names of other students who smoked weed.
The petitioner student claimed that there was no evidence against him that he indulged in substance abuse, and that he was suspended by the institute without issuing a show-cause notice. His advocate urged the high court to restrain the institute from taking any further coercive action and requested immediate interference by allowing him to complete his course, as he is in the fourth and final semester.However, Justice Nirzar Desai refused to grant any relief to the student and issued notice to IIT-Gn, seeking its reply by July 13, when further hearing was posted.
