Trade hit by diesel shortage, Kutch industry threatens stir
Ahmedabad: As diesel supply shortage worsens and disrupts transport, port and industrial operations across Kutch, trade and industry bodies have warned of agitation if fuel availability does not improve by June 1.
At a joint meeting at the Gandhidham Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Monday, representatives from transport associations, logistics operators, salt manufacturers, timber traders and port-linked businesses said restricted diesel supply was affecting movement of trucks, trailers and heavy machinery across the district.
Industry representatives said Kutch, home to major ports in Kandla and Mundra, plays a critical role in the country’s exports, and a prolonged fuel shortage could impact cargo movement and industrial operations. Diesel shortage has also hit the running of industrial equipment like cranes and DG sets, leading to operational delays and mounting uncertainty for businesses.
After the meeting, the bodies decided to submit joint representations to oil marketing companies, district authorities and the state administration seeking immediate intervention and higher diesel allocation for the region.
Trade leaders also demanded special quotas for the transport sector and heavy machinery operators besides a joint meeting with govt officials and oil companies for clarity on the situation. The trade groups warned of launching an agitation if the situation does not improve by June 1, adding that their first attempt would be to resolve the issue through dialogue and coordination with the administration.
