Student accuses maternal uncle of sexual abuse, files police complaint
Ahmedabad: An 18-year-old college student from Uttar Pradesh has lodged a police complaint with the Amraiwadi police, alleging prolonged sexual harassment, coercion, and intimidation by her maternal uncle, with whom she had been staying in Ahmedabad for her higher studies.According to the FIR, the young woman moved to Ahmedabad nearly two years ago to pursue a BSc degree at a college in Khokhra and took residence at her maternal uncle's home. She stated that during the initial months, her uncle behaved normally. However, over time, he allegedly began displaying inappropriate behaviour, which later escalated into repeated instances of sexual harassment. In her complaint, the student said her uncle "started looking at me with bad intentions" and, for more than a year, would touch her inappropriately under various pretexts. She alleged that he would grope her, hold her waist while she served him water, and on several occasions sexually exploited her. The complaint further mentions that he repeatedly pressured her to engage in sexual acts and made unwelcome and obscene demands. The student said she initially confided in her aunt, who refused to believe her. She later informed her parents during a family visit in Ahmedabad, but they allegedly dismissed her allegations, urging her to remain silent to "avoid harming the family's honour."The woman further told police that for the past one-and-a-half months, she had not been permitted to attend college regularly. Even during examination days, she alleged, her uncle insisted on accompanying her, continuing to touch her inappropriately and stare at her in a manner that made her uncomfortable and fearful.According to the complaint, when the matter resurfaced at home, the accused allegedly threatened her with dire consequences. She stated that he warned her, "If you tell anyone, I will kill you," which left her terrified. On Friday morning, seizing an opportunity while the family was asleep, the student left the house and approached the police station to seek help and initiate legal action. Based on her complaint, police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to sexual harassment and criminal intimidation, and have launched further investigation.InfoProlonged harassmentStudent alleges uncle harassed and exploited her for over yearFamily allegedly dismissed complaint to protect perceived family honourUncle reportedly threatened to kill her if she spokeStudent restricted from college attendance for nearly six weeksPolice registered a case under BNS harassment and intimidation sections
