Agra: A 32-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by two men after she left her home following a dispute with her husband and reached a secluded spot in Mathura, police said on Tuesday. The two accused were later arrested after an encounter in which one of them sustained a gunshot injury.
Police said the woman left home on the afternoon of March 14 and reached an area near a kutcha road leading to Yamuna. "The duo found her alone, overpowered her, and raped her," said Jasveer Singh, SHO of Mathura police station, where the FIR was registered. After returning home, she told her husband about the assault, following which police registered a case under BNS section 70(1) for gang rape and section 71(1) for repeated sexual offence.
After her medical examination, police launched a search for the accused and tracked them near the Radharani underpass in the early hours of Tuesday following a tip-off. Police said Rajkumar, 24, opened fire when officers moved in to arrest them, and suffered a bullet injury in retaliatory firing. "Rajkumar was overpowered in an injured condition, while Durgesh surrendered immediately after," DSP Sandeep Singh said.
Rajkumar was admitted to hospital and remained in police custody. Police said they recovered a country-made pistol and three cartridges. Officials added that Rajkumar had a criminal record, including a 2025 case of sexual assault involving a minor. After the encounter, police also registered a separate FIR against both accused under BNS section 109(1) for attempt to murder and relevant sections of Arms Act.
