Indian railways targets new sources of revenue, cost cuts
The government has planned to cut costs and generate new sources of revenue next year to offset a big rise in its wage bill and help keep an ambitious modernisation plan on track on track.
Presenting the Rail Budget, Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu said the planned budget outlay for the world's fourth-largest network would be 1.21 trillion rupees, up about 20 per cent from the current year's estimated expenditure.
But a slowdown in growth of passenger and freight revenues has put pressure on the railways' finances one year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government unveiled a 5-year $137 billion investment plan to overhaul the saturated and decrepit network.
Railway budget fails to cheer market, sensex down 82 points
Market was not too much enthused by a 21 per cent hike in capital outlay announced in the Rail Budget 2016 as the benchmark sensex slipped below the key 23,000-mark briefly before shaping up.
Traders said cutting down on bets by cautious participants in view of expiry of February derivatives contracts kept sentiment fragile.
The 50-share Nifty tumbled to 6,997.40, down 21.30 points, or 0.30 per cent, at 1354 hours.
