Did Tata Motors just target Maruti at Punch EV event? Here's what happened
Tata Motors has launched the facelifted Punch EV, priced from 9.69 lakh, ex-showroom. However, a particular moment during the presentation also grabbed attention. One of the slides shown at the event appeared to take a subtle dig at Maruti Suzuki.
Maruti Suzuki has recently debuted in the EV segment with the Maruti e-Vitara and has been promoting its electric journey with the tagline “India goes electric.” During Tata Motor’s presentation, a slide read “India has already gone electric,” with special emphasis on the words “has already.” This was likely a direct response to Maruti’s campaign line.
Tata also displayed two maps of India during the event, one representing 2023 and another showing 2026. The newer map showed a much wider coverage area, indicating that Tata EVs have already reached most regions of the country. The slide seemed to underline Tata’s early presence and growing reach in India’s electric vehicle market.
Tata Motors is among the early players in India’s EV space and currently offers a portfolio that includes the Tata Harrier EV, Nexon EV, Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Curvv EV, along with the Punch EV. The company has also been working on expanding charging infrastructure through partnerships and network growth.
Maruti Suzuki’s e-Vitara has recently launched the e-Vitara at a starting introductory price of 10.99 lakh, ex-showoom, with extra charges for the battery usage.
While Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the Indian market in terms of ICE vehicle sales, the electric vehicle space has a very different picture. Tata Motors has built a lead in the EV segment, but with more players entering the market, the competition is only expected to intensify. How this rivalry shapes up in the coming years remains to be seen.
