New Kia Seltos spied testing with possible Hybrid setup: Details
Kia India recently launched the new second-generation Kia Seltos in the Indian market, bringing major updates in terms of design, features and underpinnings. However, despite the SUV being a relatively fresh launch, the model has once again been spotted undergoing road tests, hinting at the possibility of a new powertrain option under development. The latest-generation Seltos introduced a completely redesigned exterior along with a more premium cabin layout packed with new-age technology and comfort features. The SUV is also based on Kia’s newer K3 platform, which is expected to support electrified powertrain options in the future.
Now, with fresh test mules being spotted soon after the launch of the updated model, speculation around a hybrid version of the Seltos has started gaining momentum. While Kia has not officially confirmed anything yet, the testing activity suggests that the company could be evaluating a hybrid setup for the SUV. A hybrid-powered Seltos could help Kia improve fuel efficiency figures, and it will also allow the Seltos to better compete with rivals that are increasingly focusing on strong-hybrid technology.
Details regarding the hybrid powertrain are still under wraps. However, the Seltos is expected to use a self-charging strong-hybrid setup instead of a plug-in hybrid system. Recently, the Seltos Hybrid was showcased at the New York International Auto Show for the US market. The US-spec Kia Seltos Hybrid is equipped with a 1.6-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain paired with an all-wheel-drive setup. The India-spec version, however, is expected to feature a smaller 1.5-litre hybrid unit along with front-wheel drive.
The hybrid version of the Kia Seltos is expected to retain the same overall design as the standard model, with no major visual changes likely on the exterior. In terms of design, the front of the new Seltos clearly draws inspiration from Kia’s larger global SUVs. Its grille now dominates the fascia with a bold, stepped pattern highlighted by vertical gunmetal inserts, stretching almost the entire width of the nose. Squared-off LED headlamps sit at either corner, continuing the upright theme, while the DRLs create a vertical light signature that’s further accentuated by a lightning-bolt–shaped LED element positioned at the outer edges. Lower down, the bumper features contrasting black cladding and neatly integrated, rectangular surrounds for the fog lamps, adding to the SUV’s sturdier look.
On the sides, the shoulder line is more pronounced, the wheel arch is chunkier and it gets newly designed 18-inch wheels. The traditional pull-type handles have been replaced with flush-fitted units. Kia has retained its signature pinch in the window line near the C-pillar, but it now flows into a blacked-out element that visually links the rear quarter glass with the windscreen, giving the SUV a wraparound effect. At rear, the number plate holder has been moved to the bumper for a cleaner tailgate, but the real highlight is the new inverted L-shaped LED light signature.
