British police on Wednesday recovered the bodies of three women from the sea off Brighton in southern England, triggering a major emergency response and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to Sussex Police, emergency services were alerted at around 5.45am local time after concerns were raised about three women in the water near Madeira Drive on Brighton’s eastern seafront. Their bodies were later recovered from the sea.
Helicopter, lifeboats rushed to scene
Local media reports said several emergency vehicles, RNLI lifeboats, and a coastguard helicopter were deployed to the area as rescue teams carried out operations along the shoreline. Coastguard teams from Shoreham, Newhaven, Littlehampton and Birling Gap also joined the response effort.
Police call incident “tragic”
According to Reuters, Chief Superintendent Adam Hays of Sussex Police described the development as a “tragic incident” and said investigators were working swiftly to establish the identities of the women and determine exactly what had happened.
“This is a tragic incident and fast-moving inquiries are ongoing to confirm the identities of these three women and understand exactly what has happened,” Hays said in a statement.
He also requested the public to avoid the area while emergency services continued their work at the scene.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the ages or identities of the women, and the circumstances leading to the deaths remain unclear. Police said further updates would be issued as inquiries progress.
