US Iran War News Live Updates: Iran FM Araghchi meets PM Modi in New Delhi

US Iran War News: The escalating standoff between the United States and Iran has entered a critical phase, with military escalation, diplomatic friction and mounting tensions in the Strait of Hormuz drawing global attention.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly maintained that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” saying the issue outweighs concerns over market volatility and rising prices in the US economy. Tehran, meanwhile, has criticised Washington, with Iranian state media reporting that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described distrust in US actions as the biggest obstacle to peace during talks with Norway’s deputy foreign minister in Tehran.

The regional fallout continues to deepen as the leader of Hezbollah urged the Lebanon government to withdraw from planned direct talks with Israel in Washington this week, calling them a concession and advocating indirect negotiations instead. Lebanon and Israel are expected to hold two days of talks beginning Thursday in a bid to prevent further escalation after the latest Israel-Hezbollah conflict that erupted following the Iran war, while also discussing the future of relations between the two countries, which have officially remained at war since 1948.

Iran war news: Palestinian man allegedly shot dead by Israeli forces in West Bank
Palestinian authorities alleged that Israeli police have shot and killed a Palestinian man as he attempted to climb the concrete barrier separating West Bank from Jerusalem.

The Palestinian health ministry and the Palestinian Red Crescent identified the man as Zakaria Qatusa, 44, from the town of Deir Qadis, about 20 kilometers (13 miles) northwest of the site of the shooting Tuesday evening in the West Bank town of Al-Ram, which abuts the wall.

Israeli police didn't immediately respond to queries about the shooting. The funeral for the man was held on Wednesday.

Khalid Qatusa, his brother, said that he was a father of four who was crossing the wall in order to work in Israel.

“He was forced to resort to this method as there was no other opportunity to meet the needs of his household and live a dignified life. This was the only way,” he said. “He was neither an aggressor nor a threat.”

An increasing number of Palestinians from West Bank have attempted to enter Israel illegally to work in recent years. Before the Israel-Hamas war, tens of thousands of Palestinians held permits to work in Israel, but access was sharply restricted after the attack by Hamas-led militants on southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

US-Iran war: Death toll from latest Israeli strikes in Lebanon rises to 12
Israel intensified strikes on Lebanon on Wednesday with the health ministry reporting 12 people killed in attacks targeting cars, mostly south of Beirut, despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

The fresh raids, which also targeted various areas of the country's south, came on the eve of a new round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in Washington brokered by the United States, as Hezbollah remains strongly opposed to the move.

Lebanon's health ministry said three strikes on cars along or near the coastal highway around 20 to 30 kilometres (12-19 miles) from capital Beirut "resulted in eight martyrs, including two children".

Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) said two strikes hit cars on the busy highway linking Beirut to the country's south, while a third struck nearby.

An AFP photographer saw a burnt-out car and rescuers carrying a body at one of the sites, near Jiyeh.

A fourth strike hit a car in Sidon, southern Lebanon's largest city, around 40 kilometres south of Beirut, with the health ministry reporting one dead there.

The ministry also said Israeli strikes on another three cars in south Lebanon's Tyre district killed three more people.

Under the terms of the April 17 ceasefire released by Washington, Israel reserves the right to act against "planned, imminent or ongoing attacks".

US-Iran war: 'One country stalling Brics consensus on West Asia conflict,' says Iran's deputy foreign minister
Iran will welcome any initiative by major powers like India to bring peace to West Asia and it is developing a new service-and-payment-based framework for the passage of merchant vessels through the Strait of Hormuz in line with international norms, Iranian deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi said on Wednesday.

Gharibabadi told a select group of journalists that a demand by "one member country" of the BRICS to condemn Iran has prevented the grouping from reaching a unified position on the regional conflict, an apparent reference to the United Arab Emirates.

"We want India's BRICS chairship to be successful. It is not a good approach to send a signal to the world that the BRICS is divided. One country is insisting to condemn Iran," he said.

"We have not attacked neighbouring countries. They handed their territories to the US to launch an attack on us. We never insisted that Arab countries should be condemned as they allowed their military bases to the US."

Gharibabadi said India has displayed "impartiality" as a chair of the BRICS.

Iran war news: EU energy commissioner warns of potential jet fuel shortage in long term
The European Union's energy commissioner said Wednesday that while there is no immediate threat to jet fuel supplies, the possibility of a longer-term shortage cannot be ruled out.

Commissioner Dan Jørgensen told reporters that any shortage will depend on how the Iran war and the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will unfold, as well as how airlines will react after some companies — including the German owners of the airline Lufthansa — cancelled a significant number of flights.

Fighting around the Strait of Hormuz, from which a fifth of the world’s oil typically passes, has disrupted supplies and caused fuel prices to spike around the world.

While Jørgensen said “we’re not there yet” in terms of a jet fuel shortage, he said the bloc’s executive arm will start talks with member states “on how best to address the situation,” without offering any specifics.

'PM Modi's visit to UAE, European nations to boost energy security, tech cooperation': MEA
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a high-stakes five-nation diplomatic tour this Friday, marking his first foray into the Gulf since the conflict erupted in the West Asia region.

The six-day journey, spanning from May 15 to 20, will see PM Modi travelling to the UAE before heading to a cluster of four European nations to fortify India's global footprint.

Addressing a special media briefing, MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George detailed the itinerary, stating that "Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a five-nation tour from May 15-20, covering the UAE and four European countries -- the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy."

This diplomatic circuit is strategically designed to bolster energy security and accelerate India's transition to advanced technologies at a time when the global landscape is rattled by supply disruptions.

The Prime Minister's mission begins with a "short halt in the UAE" on May 15 for a pivotal meeting with President Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

According to Sibi George, the leaders will "discuss bilateral ties, energy cooperation and regional issues," an engagement that underscores a "pressing requirement to secure India's energy imports" as the "effective" closure of the Strait of Hormuz has severely "stressed global energy markets."

This meeting carries significant weight as "India and the UAE share a comprehensive strategic partnership, with over 4.5 million Indians living there."

Beyond protecting vital "purchases of natural gas and petroleum products," the visit follows recent regional hostilities, including a strike on a petroleum complex in Fujairah that "injured three Indians," highlighting the urgency of safeguarding New Delhi's interests in the Gulf.

Iran war news: Death toll in fresh Israeli strikes in Lebanon rises to nine
Israel intensified strikes on Lebanon on Wednesday with the health ministry reporting nine people killed in attacks targeting cars between Beirut and the coastal city of Sidon despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

The strikes along with others on various areas of the country's south came on the eve of a new round of direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in Washington, brokered by the United States.

Hezbollah, which on Wednesday claimed several attacks on Israeli troops who have invaded southern Lebanon, is strongly opposed to the direct talks.

Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) said two strikes hit cars on the highway itself -- a busy motorway that links Beirut to the country's south -- while a third struck nearby.

US-Iran war: Union minister Nitin Gadkari to cut convoy by 50% during two-day Maharashtra visit
Union minister Nitin Gadkari has decided to reduce the number of vehicles in his convoy by 50 per cent during his visit to Maharashtra starting Thursday.

The move comes following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for austerity and reduced dependence on fuel-driven vehicles.

Gadkari will visit Maharashtra on May 14 and 15 to inspect Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palakhi Marg project, the key pilgrimage routes that pass through several districts.

Ahead of his visit, the Road Transport and Highways Minister has directed the local authorities to reduce the number of vehicles in his convoy.

In his letter, Gadkari said the number of vehicles in the convoy should be reduced by 50 per cent of the usual deployment.

"As advised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it is essential to reduce consumption of fuel for transportation purposes in the interest of national energy security. Hence, I have decided to undertake travel by bus along with accompanying officers, journalists and security personnel which will also facilitate better traffic management and public convenience," he said in the letter.

Amid the crisis in West Asia, PM Modi on Sunday made a push for austerity while addressing a rally organised by the Telangana BJP in Hyderabad.

US Iran war: Sweden announces additional fuel tax cut as prices soar amid Middle East conflict
Sweden's government said Wednesday it would temporarily cut fuel taxes to counter rising fuel prices stemming from the war in the Middle East, after it already announced a cut in March.

The proposed cut would be 2.4 kronor ($0.25) per litre, which the government said would result in a litre of petrol or diesel being about 3 kronor cheaper the pump after VAT was accounted for.

The measure, expected to cost around 7.7 billion kronor, was part of a crisis package totalling 17.5 billion kronor presented by the government.

"We are now facing the worst global energy crisis the world has ever experienced. The situation in the Middle East remains unstable, and we will be put to the test," Energy Minister Ebba Busch told a press conference.

Finance minister Elisabeth Svantesson added that even if the war would end tomorrow it would still affect "Sweden's economy for this whole year".

The standoff in the Strait of Hormuz, the gateway for around a fifth of the world's oil and gas, has led to soaring oil and gas prices and affected economies around the world.

'If West Asia crisis persists...': RBI governor Sanjay Malhotra warns of 'imminent' fuel price hike
Noting that India has started witnessing the impact of global disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has said that the government has so far absorbed a significant part of the burden, but if the situation continues, it is likely to pass on some of the price increase to consumers.

Speaking at the 12th High-Level Conference on the International Monetary System, jointly convened by the International Monetary Fund and the Swiss National Bank, the RBI Governor referred to the sharp increase in the international price of crude and said the government has so far absorbed a significant part of the burden by keeping pump prices of petrol and diesel unchanged, reducing duties and allowing only marginal increases in some controlled prices such as gas.

He indicated that the current situation may not be sustainable indefinitely if disruptions persist further.

"But if this is to continue for a longer period of time, it's already, you know, about 75 days... I believe that the government, it's, you know, it's a matter of time that the government will actually pass on some of these price increases," he said.

Malhotra also said the government has remained fiscally prudent and continued on the path of fiscal consolidation, bringing down the fiscal deficit from 9.2% of GDP during the pandemic period to nearly 4.3%.

US Iran war: Sixth person hanged in Iran over charges of spying for Israel
Iranian authorities on Wednesday hanged a man in his early 30s convicted of spying for Israel, the sixth person to be executed on such charges since the start of the US-Israeli war against the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian judiciary's Mizan Online website described Ehsan Afreshteh, 32, as "a spy trained by Mossad in Nepal who sold sensitive information to Israel".

But the Norway-based Hengaw and Iran Human Rights (IHR) NGOs said in separate statements that Afreshteh had denied he shared top secret documents with Israeli intelligence and said he had been subjected to televised "forced confessions" obtained through torture.

A specialist in cybersecurity, Afreshteh had insisted that all he had done was to "warn independent websites about cyberattacks", Hengaw said.

The rights groups said he had been living in Turkey but had received assurances from Iranian authorities that he could return home safely.

He was arrested on arrival, held in solitary confinement and in June 2025 sentenced to death by judge Abolqasem Salavati, who is notorious for handing out such verdicts.

His father, who had helped coordinate his return to Iran with the safety guarantees, suffered a fatal heart attack after hearing of the verdict, both IHR and Hengaw said.

Iran war news: Eight killed in fresh Israeli strikes in Beirut, says Lebanon's health ministry
Israeli drones struck three vehicles on the main highway south of Beirut Wednesday, killing eight people, including a woman and her two children, the Lebanese health ministry said.

Two of the drone attacks hit a highway linking Beirut with the southern port city of Sidon, while a third, reported the state-run National news agency, struck the town of Saadiyat, near the busy freeway. A fourth strike on Sidon’s northern entrance happened in the early afternoon, hitting a car, according to state media.

Italy has said it is sending two warships closer to the Gulf region but clarified that any deployment in the Strait of Hormuz would take place only as part of an international mission and in the event of a lasting ceasefire, as cited by AFP.

Addressing parliament, defence minister Guido Crosetto said any potential operation in the strategic waterway would also require prior approval from lawmakers.

He also noted that Iran has effectively restricted access to the Strait of Hormuz, through which around a fifth of global oil supplies previously passed, following escalating tensions after strikes by the US and Israel in February.

US Iran war: Vietnam increases oil imports from Malaysia, South Korea amid war shortages

Between March and April, Vietnam’s imports of refined fuels rose nearly 17 per cent year-on-year by volume and jumped 144% in value terms, the data showed.

To offset reduced shipments from Singapore and China, Hanoi increased purchases from Malaysia and South Korea.

During the same period, South Korea emerged as a key supplier, exporting nearly as much refined oil to Vietnam as Singapore, with shipments rising more than 60 per cent year-on-year to 610,000 metric tonnes.

US Iran war: US intel shows majority of Iran's missile network intact despite Trump's "decimated" claims
Despite US president Donald Trump claiming that recent strikes had “decimated” Iran’s missile capabilities, a new US intelligence assessment paints a markedly different picture, according to a report by The New York Times.

Citing classified assessments by senior US officials, the report said Iran has restored operational access to 30 of the 33 missile sites it maintains along the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Around 90 per cent of the country’s underground missile facilities are now believed to be “partially or fully operational,” the report added.

The findings suggest Tehran has preserved a significant portion of its missile infrastructure and military capabilities despite months of assertions by the Trump administration that joint US-Israeli strikes had severely weakened Iran’s firepower.

The remarks were made during talks in Tehran with Norway’s deputy foreign minister, the report said.

Araghchi condemned what he described as the “arrogant approach” and “threatening, provocative rhetoric” of the American side, adding that the “lack of good faith and dishonesty of the United States is the most significant obstacle to a definitive end to the war.”

Iran War News: Media coverage of Iran war a 'treason', says Trump
US president Donald Trump on Tuesday sharply criticised sections of the media over reports he claimed portrayed Iran as performing well amid the ongoing conflict. Reiterating his claims that Iran’s military had been “completely demolished” and describing the country as an “economic disaster” without leadership, Trump accused the press of undermining the US position.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump alleged that sections of the media were “aiding and abetting” Iran by giving the country “false hope.”

“When the Fake News says that the Iranian enemy is doing well, Militarily, against us, it's virtual TREASON in that it is such a false, and even preposterous, statement. They are aiding and abetting the enemy! All it does is give Iran false hope when none should exist. These are American cowards that are rooting against our Country,” he said.

Hezbollah leader urges Lebanon to withdraw from direct talks with Israel in Washington
The leader of Hezbollah on Tuesday urged the Lebanon government to pull out of planned direct talks with Israel in Washington this week, describing the move as a concession and calling instead for indirect negotiations.

Lebanon and Israel are set to hold two days of talks in Washington beginning Thursday in an effort to prevent further escalation after the latest Israel-Hezbollah conflict that erupted two months ago following the Iran war. The discussions are also expected to address the future of ties between the two countries, which have officially remained at war since Israel’s creation in 1948.

BRICS foreign ministers met in New Delhi on Thursday amid rising global anxiety over the Iran conflict, energy disruptions and growing economic uncertainty linked to tensions in West Asia.

External affairs minister S Jaishankar, addressing the two-day conclave attended by Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi and representatives from Russia, Brazil and other member states, warned that the world was facing a period of “considerable flux” marked by ongoing conflicts, trade disruptions and security challenges.

A key focus of the discussions was the fallout of the US-Israel-Iran conflict, particularly its impact on global energy supplies and maritime security. Jaishankar stressed the importance of ensuring “safe, unimpeded maritime flows” through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route, and called for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve conflicts.

He also reiterated the need for a sustained ceasefire in Gaza and greater humanitarian access in the Palestinian enclave.

India urged BRICS nations to find “practical ways” to strengthen cooperation and help developing economies deal with challenges related to energy, food, fertiliser and supply chain security. Jaishankar said reliable supply chains and diversified markets would be essential to improving economic resilience amid geopolitical instability.

The meeting gained added significance as BRICS, now expanded to 11 members including Iran, seeks to position itself as a stabilising force for emerging economies navigating global crises ahead of the bloc’s annual summit in September.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” saying the issue takes precedence over concerns about market volatility and rising prices in the US economy. Tehran, meanwhile, has sharply criticised Washington, with Iranian state media reporting that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the lack of trust in the US as the biggest obstacle to peace during talks with Norway’s deputy foreign minister in Tehran.

At the same time, the regional fallout from the conflict continues to widen. The leader of Hezbollah on Tuesday urged the Lebanon government to pull out of direct talks with Israel scheduled in Washington later this week, calling the move a concession and advocating indirect negotiations instead. Lebanon and Israel are set to hold two days of discussions beginning Thursday in an effort to prevent further escalation after the latest Israel-Hezbollah conflict that erupted following the Iran war.
