Frances justice minister Rachida Dati is being squeezed out of her top government post to run for EUelections - just 21 days after giving birth, reports said onFriday.
The 43-year-old caused a sensation when she originallyreturned to work just five days after the birth of Zohra, a baby girl, onJanuary 2. Many feminist groups said the single mum had beenbullied by Sarkozy, who was disappointed by her poor showing atthe key department.
An official in President Nicolas Sarkozysruling UMP party said that Dati would stand for a Parisian seat in the EuropeanParliament. Party leaders have made it clear that ministers who choose tocontest the European polls would leave the government beforehand.
Dati, who is also mayor of Paris upmarket seventh district, denied last week that she was set to leave the government.
However, the Le Figaro newspaper reported Friday that she was now resignedto leaving in exchange for Sarkozys support in building a nationalpolitical career.
Dati shot to prominence in 2007, as one of threepoliticians of north African origin named to Sarkozys right-winggovernment and the first to hold a senior cabinet post.
Since then she hasrun into a string of setbacks, as aides resigned over her management style andcritics accused her of forcing through reforms.
Her refusal to namethe father of three-week-old Zohra Dati on the grounds that she has acomplicated private life, thrust her back in the media spotlight andsparked an intense media guessing game.
