A shooter claimed the lives of 10 individuals and left numerous others injured at a university in Prague. The police subsequently took action and ‘eliminated’ the assailant.

Panic ensued in the historic center of the Czech city as a result of the violence, prompting a significant police intervention. The police department announced the closure of the square and strongly encouraged individuals to evacuate the neighboring streets and take shelter indoors.

Police responded to the incident at the university building located in Jan Palach Square in the capital of the Czech Republic. Prague's emergency service reported the deployment of "numerous ambulance units" to the faculty, indicating injuries varying from minor to severely serious.

In response to the shooting, teachers and students at the Charles University Faculty of Arts were advised to secure themselves in place and lock themselves up while the police carried out their operation.

Czech government’s response to the attack

Prime Minister Petr Fiala cancelled his trip to the east of the country and was en route to Prague. Interior Minister Vit Rakusan informed the public via Czech TV that there is no confirmation of any additional gunmen and urged individuals to adhere to the instructions provided by the police.

Gun-crimes rare in Czech

Although rare in Czech, the last gun crime was in December 2019, when a 42-year-old assailant took the lives of six individuals in a hospital waiting room in the eastern Czech city of Ostrava. Subsequently, the perpetrator fled and ultimately took his own life, as reported by the police.
