Chief Justice of India Surya Kant clarified his recent remarks comparing some unemployed youngsters to “cockroaches”, stating that his observations were misquoted and were specifically aimed at individuals entering professions with fake and bogus degrees. Issuing a statement a day after the remarks sparked controversy, CJI Kant said he had immense respect for Indian youth and described them as pillars of a developed India. The clarification came after strong observations made during a Supreme Court hearing on a petition seeking senior advocate designation. A bench comprising CJI Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi had criticised the petitioner’s conduct and raised concerns over alleged fake law degrees. The petitioner later apologised before the court and withdrew the plea, which was allowed by the bench.
