Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 18 attended MoU for ‘Establishment of Srimanta Sankardev Chair’ in JNU at Nedfi house in Guwahati. While addressing the media persons at the event, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma spoke on polygamy and monogamy. He said that in Islam, monogamy is a rule, polygamy is an exception and the only purpose of polygamy is to increase the respect for Muslim womens.Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “On polygamy there will be no crackdown because polygamy is legal as of now so far as Muslims believers are concerned. Till we amend the law, polygamy is legal so you cannot crack it down. But, if any Hindu is practicing polygamy then we can crackdown. I think by August-September you will see another crackdown on the file marriage offenders. The only purpose of polygamy is to increase the respect for Muslim mother and daughter. They shouldn’t be treated as a second grade citizen of this country. In Islam, monogamy is a rule, polygamy is an exception.”
