AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi sparked a political controversy after stating that India could one day have a hijab-clad woman as Prime Minister. Speaking at a rally in Solapur, he contrasted India’s Constitution with Pakistan’s, noting that India places no religious restrictions on holding top constitutional offices. Owaisi credited Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s vision for ensuring inclusivity and equal opportunity for all citizens. The BJP strongly reacted to his remarks. Maharashtra minister Nitish Rane dismissed the idea, asserting India as a Hindu nation and opposing the possibility of hijab- or burqa-wearing women holding key posts. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala responded by saying the Constitution allows anyone to become Prime Minister but challenged Owaisi to first promote women and Pasmanda Muslims within his own party leadership.
