Talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad have ended without a breakthrough, forcing both sides to scale back ambitions for a comprehensive deal. Instead, negotiators are now working toward a temporary memorandum aimed at preventing a return to conflict while leaving major disputes unresolved. Key sticking points remain, particularly around Iran’s nuclear programme. Washington is pushing for long-term restrictions on uranium enrichment and removal of existing stockpiles, while Tehran insists on its sovereign right to enrichment and is demanding phased sanctions relief. There has been limited progress on issues like the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has signalled flexibility on shipping access under certain conditions. If agreed, the interim deal could create a 60-day negotiation window involving technical experts and international agencies. However, past agreements have taken years to finalise, indicating that any immediate outcome is likely to be temporary rather than transformative.
