Celebrating Pak win over India: Is the government right in invoking UAPA, NSA against students?

Many people were angered after some Kashmiri students at a medical college in Srinagar were filmed celebrating Pakistan's victory over India in the T20 World Cup match. The J&K administration invoked the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against those students. Outside Jammu and Kashmir too, there were reports of some minority community members rejoicing after India's defeat. In Rajasthan, a private school teacher was terminated from her job, while the Yogi Adityanath govt invokes NSA against people who celebrated Pakistan's win. But, are these steps legally tenable? And should the government take any action against people who rejoice at India's sporting defeat at the hands of its arch enemy? We talked to senior Supreme Court lawyer Sanjay Hegde.
