The National Behrupiya festival is taking place at the Indra Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) in Delhi, where Behrupiyas from all over the country are performing a variety of roles ranging from Ravana to Charlie Chaplin and even a local don. Behrupiya is a traditional Indian style of street theatre wherein the Behrupiya or impersonator brings alive a new character every day. Traditionally a Behrupiya chooses between 52 roles to play but with modern times and upcoming popular cultures, new characters have been added to the list. The rise of technology and the proliferation of modern entertainment has led to the decline of the humble Behrupiyas who were once an important part of our culture. The Behrupiya community still performs at festivals and homes across India but struggles to maintain its well-being.
