Jaaved Jaaferi has been an OG in many ways: Terence Lewis
Back on the judges’ panel of India’s Best Dancer, choreographer Terence Lewis says the Indian dance scene has undergone a massive transformation over the years — largely driven by technology and social media. Reflecting on how contestants have evolved, he says dancers earlier came in with raw talent that needed grooming. “That whole journey of seeing their potential being harnessed was beautiful. But in the last 10 years, there’s been a massive shift because of technology.”
According to him, today’s dancers have exposure to multiple styles and performers from across the world, unlike earlier generations who relied mainly on their gurus for training. “New-age dancers start where earlier dancers used to finish,” says Terence.
The change has also pushed judges to constantly evolve. “We need to upgrade and upskill ourselves too. Technique has become a standard now. Today, performance, individuality and stage presence are what truly set contestants apart,” he explains.
This season has also reunited him with actor-dancer Jaaved Jaaferi, whom he credits as one of the pioneers of dance reality television in India. “I have the deepest respect for Jaaved Jaaferi. He’s been an OG in many ways. Boogie Woogie started an era of dance shows in India, and we carried that legacy forward,” he says. Terence adds that the two share a warm camaraderie and have previously judged together as well. “I really look up to him,” he says.
