From Manoj Pahwa thinking the show was a scam to fans throwing stones at Divya Seth; when the cast of Hum Log recalled fond memories on TKSS

Indian Television's first show Hum Log recently completed 39 years. The show was supposed to be shot only for 52 episodes, however, with fans' love in those days the show got extended for 104 more episodes. The cast of the show Seema Pahwa, Manoj Pahwa, Rajesh Puri and Divya Seth had graced The Kapil Sharma Show to celebrate 36 years of Hum Log. Joyshree Arora, Abhinav Chaturvedi, Loveleen Misra and veteran actress Sushma Seth joined them through virtual conversation. Take a look at what the cast had to share about shooting Hum Log, their bond and life events.

When asked about how they were cast, Manoj had revealed, "I didn't go for the casting. When they told me that there would be 2 episodes shot per week and I would earn Rs 500 for each episode. I thought it was a scam. They would make me fill out a form and then take that money from me. But when the show got telecast and I saw the first episode, I did regret not going for the show. I kept wishing that I got another chance. My entry happened because of Seema."

Seema Pahwa shared how Manoj got the role. "We used to do theatre together and when the makers were introducing Tony's character I told them that I know one boy and I searched for Manoj." Manoj added, "I was at Manzar theatre when Vinodji and Seema came to me. I was wearing a kurta so they borrowed my co-star's pant shirt, and his shoes and took me to the makers after polishing me and got me the role of Tony."

Divya then shared the crazy fan reaction in those days. "When Majhli's running away with Tony's episodes got aired. People were throwing stones at me. I still remember my director asked us to let me sit in the middle, inside the car or else people will again start throwing stones looking at me. It was quite revolutionary in those days to have a three-camera setup and AC studio."

Seema shared how people used to get serious about everything that was told in the show. I had this dialogue in the show 'Jisko bhi problem hai, mere paas aa jaye' as I was a social worker in Hum Log. You won't believe one day when I reached home a lady and her kid were waiting for me as she had taken it seriously and come to discuss her problems. I ended up doing social service for 3 years after the show."

Manoj then shared about Seema and his love story, "Once I was roaming with Seema on my bike in Connaught Place. There were a few boys standing there who taunted me. They said, 'TV pe Majhli ko ghuma raha aur yahan badki ko ghuma raha hai yeh'."

Rajesh also shared about the popularity, "I remember when I went to Dubai, many people refused to take money from me but I did give them." He further shared about fans keeping Lalloo nights in small cities, "There used to be a mela in Meerut where they had Lalloo nights and I went to grace the show. The organisers gave me a makeup room and suddenly dacoits had come there. So they locked me inside. Later, I came to know that the dacoits were my fans and had come to meet me. I requested the organisers to let them meet me and later the dacoits stayed outside the hall to protect me."

Rajesh Puri reveals he married his real wife the next day after his reel wedding. He said, "I got married on December 8 in reality and on December 7 I was getting married on-screen with Usha Rani (Renuka Israni) so I knew all the rituals. The pandit at my wedding got confused and asked me how many weddings I have done. That I have a full practice. I said I did one yesterday only."

Seema shared, "We didn't have a big room so all of us used to adjust together and there used to be times when we would eat each other's tiffins while the other one went for a shot." Rajesh added, "We had such a strong bonding that we never called each other by our real names. Even at my wedding, as there are rituals that happen between both families, for my dad's ritual both my real and reel father Vinod ji who played Basesar Ram."

Kapil asked Joyshree, she was barely in her 20s when she played the character, did people recognize her outside? She shared, "People couldn't recognise me. They would invite me to the award shows and then ask me at the gate, 'Who am I had to tell them that I am the same person who plays the mother in Hum Log.' I still remember once in the market I was with my little daughter and a shopkeeper asked me whether the one who plays the mother in Hum Log happens to be my mom."

Sushma was asked about playing grandma to her real daughter Divya in Hum Log, she shared, "When I read the character for the show, Manohar Joshi had written it so well that I couldn't say no to it. I had to play the character and it got so much love from the audience."

Seema shared a fun anecdote from Hum Log, "Joyshree loved acting, she was also very excited to even when the camera was not on, she would still stay in the character." Joyshree then added, "There was one slapping scene when I had to slap Badki and I couldn't do it. Seema then encouraged me to slap her in reality. I hit her so hard that we ended up crying even after the scene was over."

Loveleen Misra played the character of Chutki in the show, she shared her journey, "When I joined the cast, I was raw and I didn't know how to act properly so I would credit the show to be my school where I actually got trained and learned from my guru Sushma ji on the show."

While talking about her character Sushma shared, "Dadi was supposed to die in the show as she was diagnosed with cancer but there were tons of letters from fans requesting the makers to let Dadi continue the character so in the last episode of the show Dadi dies to justify the track." Seema and Divya add, "We had actually cried inconsolably in the last scene."
