Akash Singh has won the the reality show Hunarbaaz Desh Ki Shaan! The 25-year-old, who impressed audiences with his aerial acts, hails from Bihar. He came to Mumbai in 2018 wanting to make a mark in this city of dreams. It has been tough but it's worth it, he says. In an exclusive interview with Bombay Times, he speaks about his craft, dreams and struggles to get here. Excerpts...

How do you feel after winning this show?

I am extremely happy that I have won this show. I feel that one of my dreams has come true and I couldn't have asked for more. I want to thank everyone who helped me and supported me on this journey. It wasn't easy to come this far, but now after winning, I feel that the journey was worth it.

3/7

While competing with other co-contestants initially, did you feel you could win this show?

When I auditioned for this show, I saw so many people who were skilled and I wasn't sure if I would even crack the auditions. Then after doing that, I saw other contestants on the show who were doing many different things and they were really good. I decided that I would also work hard on my craft and make sure that I would reach the finale. I kept working on myself and tried to better every performance of mine."

Judge Parineeti Chopra called you her brother on the show. How did she react to your win?

Parineeti ma'am was happy to see me win. She said that I had really worked hard to get here. She has been very kind and sweet to me throughout this show. She even gifted me a jacket which is very special for me. I feel that in a city where I know nobody, I found a sister in her. One thing she told me at the end was, Akash kabhi ghamand mat karna. She said you must stay grounded. This is one thing that I'll always remember.

5/7

How did your parents react to your victory?

My parents are extremely happy to see me win, especially my mother. This was their dream too. The money that I have earned from this show will also help us building our lives.

6/7

Now that you have won this show, what are you hoping to do next?

I want to keep working in this industry; I want to work as a choreographer. I have got an opportunity to do that and I hope I continue getting work here. I am grateful to this stage and the entire team for giving me this opportunity.

7/7

You came here from Bihar and had to struggle a lot initially. How do you feel when you look back at your journey so far?

I came to Mumbai in 2018 to audition for a show. I wasn't good at it then, so I wasn't picked. I continued staying here and worked hard. I used to practise in Shivaji Park, Dadar. I could go and practice there. There was this man who was kind to me and allowed me to live in a temple. I then asked a few people around for some work so that I could earn some money to take care of my meals. I got a job to distribute newspapers, later I have worked as a milkman and then as a security guard. During this time, I kept working on my craft. I then auditioned for Hunarbaaz and now after winning the show, I feel so good. I feel I have come a long way in life. Now, I want to stay in Mumbai and work here."
