The spirit of the cityWord to the wise: Smoking is permitted inside in most Viennese cafés. If you’re overly sensitive to smoke, you might want to give them a miss.
A café in Vienna is like a street corner in another city, or perhaps a pub or a rotary club. People drop by for something to eat, or just to linger. Patrons socialise, smoke, drink coffee, read the newspaper, sip wine, play on the computer or simply watch the people inside the café, or the pedestrians outside on the street drifting by.
Some of the cafés seem a little run-down, while others are a little more spruced up. There are more cafés in Vienna than it’s possible to mention in a single article. If you’re a fan of café culture, spend some time in one, and sample some appetising sweets, as well as a variety of coffees, like Melange (traditional coffee with milk) or Kleiner Brauner (a small, dark espresso).
