Landslide causes blockage on Gangotri Highway in Uttarakhand

The Gangotri National Highway has been blocked due to a landslide on Monday June 7, 2021.

According to the TOI, the blockage has occurred near the Sunagar area in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The landslide resulted in huge boulders and a massive amount of debris falling on the highway, thus blocking it.The highway was likewise blocked on May 29 after a landslide due to continuous rain.

Meanwhile, regular prayers are in progress at the Gangotri temple after it opened its portals in the middle of May 2021, following a winter break. Even though the shrine is open, no devotees are allowed to enter the premises due to COVID safety protocols.
Gangotri temple is a part of the Char Dham pilgrimage of Uttarakhand along with Kedarnath, Badrinath and Yamunotri temples.

The trek to Gangotri glacier in the higher reaches of the mountains starts from Gangotri. The route is 19 km long, and it offers the sight of Gaumukh, the origin of River Ganga.
