Experience the best of nature at the ongoing Flamingo Festival in Andhra Pradesh

The ongoing Flamingo Festival (January 3–5, 2023) is turning multiple locations in Andhra Pradesh into some of the best venues for wildlife viewing. Places like Pulicat Lake (Andhra Pradesh’s side), Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary, Sullurpeta, Atikanithippa and BV Palem are right now teeming with visitors and birds.

The annual Flamingo Festival celebrates the arrival of thousands of birds who make their annual migration to the Indian subcontinent during the winter months. This is the time when they breed, feed and nest. The Indian shores and woodlands become their safe home for a few months.


Birdwatchers from not only India but all over the world come just to see these winged beauties. Most of these birds migrate from places as far as Siberia and the Himalayan highlands.


The Flamingo festival is a great way to get closer to nature and also to enjoy fun programmes organised by the local communities. The festival venue at Sullurpeta will have several exhibition stalls featuring interesting items and interactions with the Forest and Animal Husbandry departments.



Festival venues like the one at Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary attracts a lot of younger, school-going crowd. As the name suggests, the main attractions at these festival venues are the flamingos, but apart from these long-legged feathered beauties, birds like pelicans, storks and other waders, capture the attention of the visitors. .The trees and perches surrounding the wetlands and lakes host these beautiful birds.


The festival will also see programmes like bird photography contests and environment education sensitisation programmes.

Most of the festival venues are located in the district of Tirupati. The nearest airport is Tirupati Airport. Nellore is the most convenient railway head and is also the nearest biggest city (40 km approximately).
