India's first water metro, the Kochi Water Metro, has been flagged off by PM Narendra Modi in Kochi. The water service is a feeder service that is linked with the metro rail network and includes proper terminals, gates and air-conditioned, battery-powered, disabled-friendly boats. The service will begin operating on April 26, 2023, running initially on two routes: High Court - Vypin and Vyttila - Kakkanad, and costing INR 20 per single ride. Read less
As per the reports, this water transport service is called the Kochi Water Metro. This one-of-its-kind boat service is linked with the metro rail network. How, you ask? The project is under Kochi Metro Rail Corporation Limited. These boats will act as feeder service, just like we have metro feeder bus services.
Also, these feeder boats are battery-powered, air-conditioned and disabled-friendly, and are expected to connect several islands. Since they are battery-operated, these metro boats are going to be eco-friendly too.
For those looking forward to using the service, a single ride will cost INR 20. One can also avail boat passes (weekly/monthly), or get the Kochi One Card. You can use the Kochi One Card on both feeder boats and the Kochi Metro.
