The Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala is known for its population of elephants and tigers, making it a veritable pit stop on the Kerala itineraries, for wildlife enthusiastic travellers. The main draw of the small town, which serves as the base of the sanctuary, is the forest itself. Hundreds of travellers travel to Periyar during winters in hope to have successful sightings of the endemic wildlife of the region. There are several ways allocated to split the tourists on the basis of the number of hours and adventure quotient. Most of the tourists reserve only half a day for their tryst with wildlife and opt for the packed cruise that bobs in the Periyar Lake for an hour. The daylong bamboo raft rides and on foot trekking are more adventurous and immersive ways of entering the forest. Accompanied with a guard, the groups are usually smaller and serious about wildlife. The access through Gavi is yet another way of spending a whole day in the jungle. This is inclusive of a jeep ride, walking trail, meals and if you want to extend your time here, even a few options to stay over. The last option is the jeep safari that is offered in forest all over India.
