Sri Lanka is one beautiful country with absolutely rich history, culture and tradition. And like any other Asian countries that take pride in protecting their age-old traditions, Sri Lanka too has its conservative side. If you are planning a trip to Sri Lanka, make sure you know a few important rules and regulations that are followed here, as knowing about your destination always helps! So here are a few things that you must ‘avoid’ doing when in Sri Lanka. Here have a look.
Now that’s something you’ll always have to keep in mind when in Sri Lanka. Never ever turn your back on any Buddha statue as it is considered disrespectful. You can take a picture but make sure that you are facing towards the Buddha and not otherwise.
PDA is not entertained
When in Sri Lanka, try not to get too touchy in public. Public display of affection or PDA is not at all accepted in the country. Any such activity is considered a bad form of behavior in Sri Lanka, and still if you can’t resist yourself, carry an umbrella!
Avoid wearing clothes having Buddha prints or images
Well, Buddha is vastly revered in Sri Lanka, and people respect the Lord with all their soul and body. If you wear clothes having Buddha prints or images, chances are that people will give you unappreciative looks. So until and unless you don’t want to frown upon, avoid such attire!
Eating with left hand
Again, Sri Lanka has many weird rules and regulations! If you are a left-handed person, then Sri Lanka is probably not for you as eating with left-hand is one of the most frowned upon unclean thing to do here. So, you’ll have to be a little vigilant here!
Don’t click pictures without permission
Always, always seek permission before clicking pictures at places like museums and temples in Sri Lanka. Make sure authorities are okay with you taking pictures of the statues and other important religious artifacts.
Never mock/disrespect their religion
Well, this it is one universal fact. But in Sri Lanka it is followed very seriously. Like here, you’ll see a number of Buddhist monks and tourists often trying to capture them in their camera, which is considered an ill mannered thing to do here. Touching a monk is strictly prohibited, especially on their head. So, never try any such thing.
