Word to the wise: If you have a paper ticket for the metro make sure you stamp it before boarding - or risk paying a hefty fine.

Oslo's small enough to explore on foot, and that's usually the best way to get around. But if you need to cross town in a hurry, or go further afield, the public transport system (Trafikanten) is fast and efficient. Six tram lines cover 99 stops across the city, while the metro serves all of Oslo's boroughs and neighbouring Bærum. Buses give you access to parts not served by tram or metro lines, and the city centre.
Tickets – valid for tram, bus and metro – can be bought from the main Trafikanten centre outside Oslo central station, at most 7-Eleven shops and from machines. Bus drivers only sell single tickets, which are more expensive than the pre-bought tickets as they have an additional surcharge added to the ticket price.

There's a reduced bus service until the early hours, but the best way to travel at night is by Oslo Taxi. It's expensive though - the minimum fare will usually be around NOK 130.
