Among the greatest European conductors and composers of the 19th century, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy wielded immense influence on the music scene and is credited with rediscovering Bach as well as spearheading the Gewandhaus Orchestra to its current first class status. Tucked away from the old town, the Mendelssohn House, which serves as a museum is nevertheless a massive multi-storey building located on Goldschmidtstrasse. Designed innovatively, the museum has a plethora of moving and static displays showcasing Mendelssohn’s life and career as well as an old world library which has acoustically superior stations to list to his music. However, the highlight is the world’s only Effektorium where any visitor can take the baton and conduct a symphony orchestra!
