If you somehow miss Christmas time and the festivals that take place in January, don’t worry, there is plenty of fun for the rest of winter, starting with the Silver Skate Festival that takes place in February. The combination of culture, art, sport and recreation make this one of the most popular winter festivals in the province. The festival runs for a whopping 10 days, ensuring that no one in the area misses it, with each day offering something unique. Try your hand at one of their skating challenges, or snowshoe demonstrations, cheer on the skate racers, and visit the heritage village. Kids will love the family fun zone, jam packed with winter activities. Night time offers a different look to the festival, with live music, dance parties, live art installations and a particularly large ice castle. The grand finale on six of the nights of the festival is the Fire Sculpture, one of the most loved parts of the festival. Each night features a different sculpture that is created during the day by a team of fire artists. At 7:45 pm the sculpture is burned so it comes alive with orange, gold and red colours, while telling a story depending on the theme of the year. This free festival is certainly not something to miss when you come to Edmonton in the wintertime.
