Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival

This winter festival kicks off at the start of January, bringing together locals and visitors from all over the world. It is a festival that celebrates communities such as Franco-Albertan, First Nations, South American and Franco-African over two days of incredible fun. Did we mention that its free to attend? The sort of things you will find at this festival include an art gallery show and sale, chariot races, dance parties, ice sculpture competitions, fireworks, award ceremonies and more. But this festival gets its name from the popular deep freezer races. What exactly is a deep freezer race? Exactly what it sounds like – teams of five join and come together to push a freezer full of people across the icy roads, wearing helmets for safety. Other crazy activities for kids include street hockey, curling, winter mini golf and free movies in a giant igloo. Located in downtown Edmonton on 118th avenue, this festival promises to be filled with plenty of fun and excitement.
