Here’s a riddle for you: What is a history museum that gives you no history and a non-profit organization that exists for profit? The answer: National Constitution Center. The exhibit includes a bald eaglefilled movie, a room full of statues of the signers of the constitution, and a lot of colourful flashing screens (interactive multimedia exhibits). Word on the street is that the centre makes most of its money by hosting catered events, and through its ludicrously expensive touring exhibits; once it was asking visitors to pay $30 for a glimpse of Bruce Springsteen’s old car. In its defence it does have a number of interesting talks by journalists, historians and politicians, but this is not a part of the museum.Instead, head to Joseph Fox Booksin the heart of Philadelphia’s downtown: Rittenhouse Square. It may not be large, but every book at Joseph Fox’s is chosen with great care. It’s the kind of bookstore you go into looking for a book you thought you’d like to read, and finding one you’ve never heard of that turns out to be far more interesting. This is a great place to go to find an absorbing book on history, with very strong sections on art and architecture as well. You’re bound to find an excellent book on Philadelphia either to read on your visit or to take home. The people at the desk (especially Joseph Fox) are great to talk to, so if you’re looking for a recommendation just go up and ask. Joseph Fox Books is also part of an organization that brings authors to do readings, so ask them if there are any interesting authors coming to town.
