Kutch Bustard Sanctuary: a tryst with the Great Indian Bustard

Set up in the year 1992, the Kutch Bustard Sanctuary came into being with a responsibility of preserving the endangered species, i.e., the Great Indian Bustard. It is one of the sanctuaries in India that is providing shelter to this heaviest flying bird, protecting it from being hunted and poached.
This sanctuary also known as the Lal-Parjan Sanctuary is located in the western side of Kutch. Visitors planning a trip to this spot should prepare themselves to get bowled over by its exquisiteness. Spreading across a vast area of 2 sq km fenced land, the Kutch Bustard Sanctuary is primarily a grassland area blessed with a topography that is apt for this species of bird.

Though the main highlight of this sanctuary is the Great Indian Bustard, you just cannot miss the opportunity of spotting the exotic varieties of other birds here. In fact, if you are lucky, you will be able to spot them as this place is home to more than 20 exotic varieties of birds. Before visiting the place, scour the internet for images of birds and check how many you have spotted there; some of the species available here are McQueen’s Bustard, bush cats, lesser florican and merlins.
Locals have nicknamed the Great Indian Bustard as ‘ghorad’, owing to its weight and height being very similar to that of an ostrich. So don’t get confused if your guide points out to a bustard and calls it ghorad.
