Inaugurated on the Swiss National Day (1st of August) in 2004, the Bundeshaus or the Parliament Building is an impressive and important structure in the heart of Bern. The headquarters of the Swiss Federal Government, this is where the Council of States and the National Council meet for four sessions in a year. Designed by Hans Auer, this Renaissance style palace has a majestic 64 m high dome that is quite a sight to see. The east wing and west wing of this structure are identical with the former being constructed only in 1884, some 30 years after the latter. The turquoise dome was completed in 1902, the final addition to this striking political address. Free guided tours are available for one and all when the parliament is not in session. The square outside, on the other hand, is perpetually bustling with activity. English tours are available on Saturday afternoons and include the chambers, the domed hall and the lobby. You will have to make your bookings in advance.
