Attend the midnight mass at the Notre Dame Cathedral

When in Paris, it is imperative to attend a midnight mass at the Notre Dame Cathedral, even if you happen to be an atheist. The striking gothic structure that is Notre Dame, replete with its many gargoyles and spires, is an embodiment of some of the strongest traditions of Paris and is one of the most visited sights in France. Every Christmas Eve, it welcomes people for an evening of festive prayers and ceremonies and the spiritual atmosphere is so relaxing that it transports you to an era gone by. The entrance of the cathedral has a massive Christmas Tree and a giant screen right in front of the nave projects the opera of the ‘Light of Light’. Moreover, owing to its importance among the Christian community, the entire ceremony is broadcasted on live television; if you are one of those people harbouring a desire to be on TV, this is your chance!
Listening to the mass along with hundreds of other people can be quite an enlightening experience. The ceremony starts at 11 PM with Christmas carols sung by the Children’s and Adults’ Choir. When the gigantic bell of the cathedral chimes at midnight in order to declare the birth of the Christ, the Midnight Mass begins and the choir joins in yet again. People later exchange greetings and the happy atmosphere extends right up to the streets where everyone can be seen celebrating.

When to go: December 24. Be there by 10 PM in order to get seats.
