Al Wathba Racetrack

One of the most traditional sports in the UAE
Word to the wise: Get to the track early—around 8am if you can—to see the most prized camels racing.

Camels used to be the symbol of food, protection, heat and friendship during the harsh days of desert living and they're loved and cherished by the Emiratis.
Camel races take place at the Al Wathba Racetrack, about 45 km from the city centre. While it's a drive to get out there, the roads are clearly marked so you'll have no trouble finding the track, which is open to the public on Thursdays and Fridays.

It's quite a surreal experience to watch: small robots have replaced jockeys, creating an interesting mix of tradition and technology.
