Being the economic, cultural, and political centre of the Balkans, and for its excellent location, Belgrade is considered to be a gateway to Europe. The crusaders from far-off lands fought to establish their stronghold, creating a battleground in Belgrade. History of various occupations, from Celts, Romans, Byzantine, Turks, Austro-Hungarian to German are etched on its many fortress, mosques, and churches. The past of Belgrade is alive under its belly, where Roman aqueduct quietly exists along with a secret canal from Byzantine era. The mighty Danube brushes the Northern frontier, whereas its little sister Sava occupies the centre of Belgrade. The capital has carved an identity on the larger canvas of Europe. Today the breakneck modernity of Belgrade is racing to take-over the glorious past shadowed by recent tragedies. The glitzy nightlife in the capital is drawing thousands of revellers from neighbouring countries over the weekends. There is mix of everything in Belgrade, diverse cultural influences blend seamlessly to create a unique identity.
