Naschmarkt

A popular and historic market, with a river running beneath it
Word to the wise: Arrive when the vendors do, as early as 6am, for some of the best deals available and to avoid the crowds.

This brilliant and stretched out bazaar, which has been active since the 16th century, boasts an abundance of Austrian and Oriental charm. The market is pinched between two serpentine roads downtown and runs for more than 500 meters, from Kettenbrückengasse Metro Station to Karlsplatz, with the Wien River flowing directly beneath it.
Tourists and locals alike come here during the morning to pick up meat, fish and fresh fruit and vegetables. On the weekends, a wide assortment of colourful trinkets are available, as the market is transformed into Vienna's largest flea market.

Small cafés, food stalls and a number of restaurants are sprinkled about the assorted vendors, offering up a variety of fare, from Austrian strudel to Greek kebabs, Italian pizza and Japanese sushi. Naschmarkt has plenty of diversions for the eye, and plenty more for the stomach.
