Mumok (Museum of Modern Art)

You’ll find Mumok (Museum Modern Kunst Stiftung) in Vienna’s amiable Museumsquartier (MQ). Grey basalt comprises the stark exterior, while inside you’ll come across a variety of modern and avant-garde art. Pieces by Günter Brus, Otto Muehl and Rudolf Schwarzkogler exemplify some of the far-reaching dreams of contemporary artists.
A diversity of movements, ranging from Cubism and Expressionism to Fluxus and Photo Realism are contained within the museum’s thick walls. The school of Vienna Actionism (Wiener Aktionismus) is also well represented here, although a bit of caution is advised before viewing. Some of the pieces are fairly grisly in nature, or overtly aggressive and sexual, therefore not everyone’s cup of tea.
