Omen

A mecca for udon noodles, Omen is yet another nondescript but extremely well-known restaurant in Kyoto. In fact, the name ‘Omen’, despite having a rather unpleasant meaning in English actually translates into ‘noodles’ in Japanese. Presented in dainty bowls in a choice of cold or hot broth, the thick, stringy goodness served at this restaurant is wholesome and delicious. There are a plethora of other eatables on their menu ranging from sashimi and tempura to spicy chicken and vegetarian options like bamboo shoots and tofu. These perfectly complement your udon. The seasoning is just right and the portions, albeit deceptively small, are just enough. Moreover, you can take a packet of their dried noodles as a souvenir.
Located in an inconspicuous neighbourhood near Ginkaku-ji Temple, Omen reflects the tranquility associated with this area. The eatery has a mixture of tatami seating and normal tables in order to make all visitors feel comfortable. It caters to foreign travellers with an English menu and extremely friendly staff who have the best recommendations to offer. Given the fact that you are made to embark upon a journey of authentic Japanese flavours, paying a few thousand Yen for your food does not really hurt much. Omen has a second outlet with pretty modern interiors in the lively Shijo-dori street of Kyoto.
