The flagship store of luxury culture and lifestyle brand ‘Maison Assouline’ is quite the smart place for a cup of coffee. Located on Piccadilly Street, the former banking hall designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1922 is now a Grade II listed building. Inside, waiters serve you in their starched white double-breasted jackets, waiting on you at your table with impeccable manners, whilst being in book heaven surrounded by fine tomes and vintage ornaments. One could be forgiven for thinking they had walked into the library of one of London’s smartest gentleman’s clubs. The coffee counter and bar are opposite the entrance as you enter the open plan showroom. The cafĂ© has been arranged so that wherever you are seated within this magnificent space, there are a great many architectural features visible to the eye. And above all, there is the chance to observe public life, as members of the public drift in to browse the incredible collection of contemporary coffee table books. On the menu are the usual selection of coffees and an exquisite selection of French platters, artisanal teas, wine, champagne, and cocktails. One final touch to enjoy is the background music, which is a compilation of tracks specifically chosen by the founders of Maison Assouline, which all combine to make this a most pleasant experience.
