If you thought that the quaint little hamlets from your childhood stories did not exist in real life, think again. Wengen, a tiny speck in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, is as dreamy as a mountain village can get. Accessible only by train, it has a population of mere 1300 residents and sits at a height of 1250 m. It is a car-free resort with a handful of electric automobiles that can be found around the train station. One of the major factors behind Wengen’s popularity is the fact that it hosts the Lauterbrunnen Downhill Ski Race, an event that attracts thousands of tourists annually. Yet another interesting aspect of Wengen is the overwhelming presence of ski clubs, all conceived by British travellers who fell in love with this place. The many wooden chalets offer a peaceful refuge to weary tourists back from a long day of skiing while the Jungfrau stands as an indomitable guard in the background.
