The Republic of Vanuatu is an archipelago of 83 subtropical islands offering a range of cultural and natural wonders to the traveller. Most of the islands are volcanic and mountainous, however there are also forested areas, jungles, and flatter, sandy, palm tree laced islands. Diverse tribal cultures are still practiced in Vanuatu’s outer islands where life is characterised by the cycle of ritual events. Tribal groups came to Vanuatu from different areas within the region, but none of them had developed a written language prior to European settlement, so storytelling through music and dance is prevalent and still popular. In addition to anthropological interests, the natural beauty of Vanuatu’s reefs, volcanoes, jungles and beaches is an ideal setting for diving, snorkelling, walking, sailing and other active pursuits. There are several luxury resorts to choose from for those interested in a more relaxing holiday.
