The ancient temples of Sagar and Sirsi

The south-western state of Karnataka is home to a wide variety of tourist hotspots. Standing at 7th position in terms of area, the state is home to a plethora of ancient sculptured temples, historic sites, picturesque hills, virgin forests and spectacular beaches. With the second highest number of nationally protected monuments in the country, Karnataka has been ranked as the 4th most popular tourist destination in India. The temples of the state are particularly attractive and depict varying styles of architecture prevalent to various periods and dynasties. Most temples are characterised by the presence of a ‘Nandi’ (bull) at the entrance, ‘Pushkarni’ or holy tank, ‘Gopura’ or an ornate tower at the entrance as well as the ‘Garbhagudi’ or inner sanctum.
The cities of Sagar and Sirsi of the state are home to a number of temples that rank high in terms of both historic and religious significance. A little over 350 km from Bangalore, Sagar is also a sub divisional and a taluk headquarters, and is easily accessible by road, bus and train from Bangalore. Sirsi, in the Uttara Kannada district is located about 425 km and again easily accessible by road, bus and train. Both cities have their own railway station. Scenic locales, lush forests and acres of areca nut plantation coupled with beautiful temples make both cities one of the most visited in the state.
