The south-western state of Karnataka is home to a wide variety of tourist hotspots. Standing at 7th position in terms of area, the state is home to a plethora of ancient sculptured temples, historic sites, picturesque hills, virgin forests and spectacular beaches. With the second highest number of nationally protected monuments in the country, Karnataka has been ranked as the 4th most popular tourist destination in India. The temples of the state are particularly attractive and depict varying styles of architecture prevalent to various periods and dynasties. Most temples are characterised by the presence of a ‘Nandi’ (bull) at the entrance, ‘Pushkarni’ or holy tank, ‘Gopura’ or an ornate tower at the entrance as well as the ‘Garbhagudi’ or inner sanctum.
