It wouldn’t be the perfect trip to Rome without venturing into the Vatican City, the smallest state in the world that was built over the tomb of Saint Peter. The star attractions in the Vatican City are the Vatican Museums, and St. Peters Basilica. Prepare to wait in long queues for either, but as many have said before us, they are indeed worth it. Here in Vatican, the museums house priceless works of art, and sculptures, while the other very popular attraction is the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo’s fresco that covers the vaulted ceiling steals the show at the Chapel, and it will be hard to look away. St. Peter’s Basilica requires a certain dress code, which does not permit shorts, short skirts, or bare shoulders, so make sure to dress appropriately. Inside you will be treated to spectacular views, tombs, sculptures and paintings. Climb the dome for a magnificent view over the square and the city. Audio guides and guided tours are available at the information desk at the front, and we highly recommend getting one or the other. Vatican Gardens is another attraction many visitors head to, as the gardens boast fountains, and gorgeous flowers, which date all the way back to medieval times.
