Come December, and a brand new airport will grace the beautiful Scandanavian region. Called, the Scandanavian Mountains Airport, it is going to be the first airport in the world without an air traffic control tower.
The Air Traffic Controller in question, at Sundsvall, is already working for the Ornskoldsvik Airport, located in northern Sweden, as well as controlling flights at the Sundsvall-Timra Airport. Officials working at the Sundsvall controller get a 360-degree-view of the airfields.
The Scandanivian Mountains Airport is set to open its doors to the public on December 22, 2019. The airport is state-of-the-art, and its terminal building can handle four flights at the same time. The airport also has a duty-free, retail shop, and a cafe. The airport, which is expected to get busy with tourists this December also has transfer buses, taxis, and rental cars outside.
Quite a few small airports have been shutting their towers and transferring the operations to other control rooms. While at the same time, airports across the US, Europe, and Australia are testing remote control towers.
